I found this picture deep in the recesses of my facebook photos from a Halloween almost two decades ago. I'm wearing a repurposed She-Ra costume at some early hour of the morning after being up all night at a house party. I'm holding a cigarette and a sword, standing against a mural somewhere near Alamo Square Park in San Francisco.
Webster's defines a hero as a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent, endowed with great strength or ability. I think that's what we're all aiming to become. Sometimes I feel like the villain or the vixen or the clown. I always wanted to be saved by the hero. I just didn't realize that the hero would be me. Here's to saving ourselves and becoming the hero of our own stories.
